Micro, Nano, and Molecular Systems News 20-12-2016 Peer Fischer gewinnt den World Technology Award 2016 Dr. Peer Fischer, Leiter der Forschungsgruppe „Mikro-, Nano- und Molekulare Systeme“ am Max-Planck-Institut für Intelligente Systeme und Professor für Physikalische Chemie an der Universität Stuttgart, erhält den World Technology Award 2016. Professor Fischer wurde aus 32 Kandidaten und anschließend aus einem Kreis von sechs Finalisten in der Kategorie „Information Technology – Hardware“ ausgewählt. News 15-12-2016 Startschuss für das Cyber Valley Wissenschaft und Wirtschaft schließen eine der größten Forschungskooperationen Europas im Bereich der künstlichen Intelligenz Intelligente Systeme werden unsere Zukunft prägen: Sie könnten uns als autonome Fahrzeuge chauffieren, als Haushaltshilfe im Alltag zur Seite stehen oder als winzige Roboter medizinische Dienste verrichten. Um die Entwicklung dorthin voranzutreiben, schaffen Partner aus Wissenschaft und Wirtschaft auf Initiative der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft und des Max-Planck-Instituts für Intelligente Systeme im Raum Stuttgart-Tübingen das Cyber Valley. On October 8, 2016, a collaboration of the research group "Brain-Computer-Interfaces" at the MPI-IS and the "Autonomous Systems Lab" at the TU Darmstadt will send a joint team into the Brain-computer-Interface Race at the Cybathlon 2016 in Zurich. The so called Athena-Minerva team consists mainly of computer science students of bachelor and master-level at the Technical University Darmstadt. They are interested in "Machine Learning", signal processing and especially for Brain-Computer-Interfaces (BCI). Den einen ermöglicht dieses phototaktische Verhalten, die Sonnenenergie möglichst effizient für Ihren Stoffwechsel auszunutzen, die anderen schützen sich so vor zu hohen Lichtintensitäten. Forscher um Clemens Bechinger vom Max-Planck-Institut für Intelligente Systeme und der Universität Stuttgart haben mit Kollegen von der Universität Düsseldorf nun einen verblüffend einfachen Weg gefunden, Mikroschwimmer zum Licht oder in die Dunkelheit zu dirigieren. Sie leisten damit auch einen Beitrag, damit winzige Roboter im menschlichen Körper künftig einmal gezielt Krankheitsherde behandeln können.

Physical Intelligence News 26-09-2016 Ein magnetischer Antrieb für Mikroroboter Weiche Materialien, die sich mit Magnetfeldern verformen lassen, könnten als Motoren für winzige Schwimmkörper dienen Mikroroboter könnten einmal nach dem Vorbild von Spermien oder Pantoffeltierchen durch den menschlichen Körper schwimmen und dort medizinische Dienste verrichten. Forscher des Max-Planck-Instituts für Intelligente Systeme in Stuttgart haben dazu magnetisierbare Gummistreifen entwickelt, die im Magnetfeld die Schwimmbewegungen natürlicher Geißeln, Zilien oder Tentakeln imitieren. Über ein eigens entwickeltes Computerprogramm haben die Forscher dabei erstmals für jede Bewegungsform die jeweils optimalen magnetischen Rahmenbedingungen vorausberechnen können. Denn Forscher des Stuttgarter Max-Planck-Instituts für Intelligente Systeme und der Universität Stuttgart haben einen Weg gefunden, mit geringem Aufwand akustische Hologramme zu erzeugen. Die Technik erweitert die Möglichkeiten, Teilchen, die zwischen einigen Mikrometern und wenigen Millimetern groß sein können, zu manipulieren. Perceiving Systems News 26-07-2016 Body Talk: A New Crowdshaping Technology Uses Words to Create Accurate 3D Body Models A breakthrough in our shared understanding, perception, and description of human body shape brings new alternatives to 3D body scanning ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA -- JULY 26, 2016 -- Researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems and the University of Texas at Dallas, revealed new crowdshaping technology at SIGGRAPH 2016 that creates accurate 3D body models from 2D photos using crowdsourced linguistic descriptions of body shape. The Body Talk system takes a single photo and produces 3D body shapes that look like the person and are accurate enough to size clothing. It does this using the help of 15 volunteers who rate the body shape in the photo using 30 words or fewer. The creators of the dataset are Federica Bogo, Javier Romero, Matthew Loper, and Michael Black.  The work originally appeared in the  IEEE Conf. on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR) 2014.
