The joint interests of the institute as a whole are subject to the scientific and administrative management of the Board of Directors. The institute currently has four directors.
The members of the Board of Directors select a Managing Director and Deputy Managing Director of the institute who execute the daily affairs. The Managing Director and Deputy Managing Director of the institute as a whole are simultaneously Managing Directors of their respective local institute site.

To ensure superior scientific quality, each Max Planck Institute is regularly evaluated by a Scientific Advisory Board (SAB). The board members, experts from leading international research institutions and universities, are appointed by the President of the Max Planck Society and serve in an honorary capacity.
Each Max Planck Institute has a Board of Trustees that fosters connections with the public, promotes the institute's work, and strengthens public confidence in autonomous research. The Board of Trustees consists of representatives from various sectors, including politics, industry, academia, and media, who are appointed by the President of the Max Planck Society and serve in an honorary capacity.
