Glassy dynamics, charge transport and electrode polarization in low molecular weight (ionic) liquids

Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy (BDS) [1], as one of the major tools in molecular physics, benefits from several advantages; (i) based on one of Maxwell´s equations it measures both, charge transport of mobile charge carriers and relaxations of the polar moieties in a molecular system, (ii) it covers an extraordinary wide spectral range from typically 10-5Hz – 109Hz or higher, (iii) with modern equipment the experiments can be carried out at widely varying electrical field strength and temperatures and (iv) its sensitivity increases with decreasing thickness of a sample capacitor and hence with a decreasing amount of sample material. With these features BDS contributes to manifold topics in academic and applied research. In the talk the scaling of glassy dynamics in low molecular weight organic liquids, [1,2], charge transport in (ionic) liquids [3] and electrode polarisation effects at interfaces [4,5] will be addressed and discussed in detail.
