Project neuroArm: Image-guided Medical Robotics Program (Talk)

Project neuroArm was established in 2002, with the idea of building the world’s first robot for brain surgery and stereotaxy. With the launch (2007) and integration of the neuroArm robot in the neurosurgical operating room (May 2008), the project continues to spawn newer technological innovations, advance tele-robotics through sensors and AI, and intelligent surgical systems towards improving safety of surgery. This talk will provide a high-level overview of two such technologies the team at Project neuroArm is currently developing and deploying: i) neuroArm+HD, a medical-grade sensory immersive workstation designed to enhance learning, performance, and safety in robot-assisted microsurgery and tele-operations; and ii) SmartForceps, a sensorized surgical bipolar forceps for real-time recording, displaying, monitoring, and uploading of tool-tissue interaction forces during surgery.
Biography: Diego Ospina holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and a Master of Science in Automation Engineering from the National University of Colombia. He earned his PhD in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Calgary, where he focused on the design of a prosthetic robot hand with in-hand manipulation capabilities. Diego's primary career focus revolves around the development of mechatronic and robotic systems aimed at enhancing human well-being. With this motivation, he is presently leading the engineering team at Project neuroArm – Medical Robotics Program, at the University of Calgary. In this role, he oversees clinical maintenance and active integration of the neuroArm neurosurgical robot, and the recently initiated clinical trial of SmartForceps System across western Canada. In addition, Dr. Ospina has been actively leading the ongoing development and completion of the next-gen neuroArm - the neuroArm+HD, a microsurgery-specific workstation for robot-assisted surgery and tele-operations.
