Birgül Akolpoglu is a postdoctoral researcher at the Physical Intelligence Department, where she works on microalgae and bacteria-based microrobots for medical applications. She is interested in combining biological agents with synthetic materials to discover new functionalities in medical microrobotics.
Birgül received her PhD degree in Information Technology and Electrical Engineering from ETH Zurich (Switzerland) in 2023. Previously, she received her MSc degree in Chemical and Biological Engineering from Koc University in Istanbul (Turkey), where she studied biocompatible coating of insulin-secreting pancreatic islets with emulsion-based microgels for the treatment of type-I diabetes. Prior to that, she pursued her BSc degree in Chemical Engineering from Istanbul University (Turkey), where she graduated as the second-highest-ranked graduate of her class.
Birgül enjoys reading and writing, and wrote and edited articles for The Offspring Magazine of the MPI PhDnet. She previously served as PhD student representative at MPI Stuttgart. She loves film photography, literature, and swimming.
