The Perceiving Systems Departmentat the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Tübingen is looking for multiple positions to support the scanning-facilities team, i.e. a
Scanning Systems Technical Research Assistant(f/m)
to fulfill the tasks of managing, upgrading, and providing support for the scanning facilities that are available at the department, and a
Mechatronics Technical Assistant (f/m)
to aid with diverse tasks required for the set-up, reconfiguration, and maintenance of those scanning facilities.
We are creating the world’s most realistic human and animal avatars for use in research, film, virtual reality, and medicine. Using unique 3D & 4D capture facilities, machine learning, computer vision, and advanced graphics, we are modeling every nuance of how humans and animals look and move. We develop algorithms to estimate human shape and motion in images, videos, RGB-D sequences, etc. Our approaches define the current state of the art, and we are constantly pushing these methods and systems in order to achieve a better accuracy and more availability.

You will work as part of a team focused on maintaining, developing, redesigning, and reconfiguring our camera-based scanning systems in order to support the quickly evolving needs of the researchers, as well as designing, building, and constantly improving the structural design of our state-of-the-art capturing facilities; such as a 20x13x8m capturing hall and unique scanners for body, faces, hands and feet. You will be expected to constantly update your knowledge and experience in order to assist with the development of the next generation of capturing technology. Throughout your work you will be collaborating with the Institute’s mechatronic workshop and fine mechanic workshop, which provide the most advanced tools and facilities to complete your tasks.
Relevant skills (not all required)
- experience in prototyping electronic projects in hardware and software domains; please send us one pagepresenting one of your recent projects - feel free to include figures
- IT support and troubleshooting experience (Windows and Linux operating systems)
- programming and scripting (e.g. C/C++, Python, Java, Bash)
- hands-on experience designing and building mechanical structures
- practical experience working with the common tools and machines available in a workshop
- CAD tools knowledge for structural design (SolidWorks, for example)
- basic knowledge in electronics and IT or mechatronics
- ability to communicate in English; German is a plus
- natural team player, capable of methodically solving problems, passion for technology
Any of the following will be a plus
- experience with computer vision systems (e.g., camera synchronization and calibration, multi-camera capture, motion capture systems, 3D scanners, VR/AR…)
- experience with digital photography, cameras, and post-processing
- experience assembling, operating and/or maintaining technical equipment used to record, amplify, enhance, mix or reproduce sound, especially voices
- experience in data acquisition from a variety of sensors
- programming skills and experience with embedded development boards (e.g. Arduino)
- experience working in R&D teams, preferably multi-disciplinary
- ability to maintain an organized research lab environment
- a desire to “get your hands dirty” in the way to create the technology of the future

The MPI for Intelligent Systems is one of the world's leading research institutions for machine learning, computer vision and robotics, and studying the concepts of intelligence and autonomous behavior in artificial systems at different length scales. You will be a part of a young team of international scientists, engineers, and administrative staff. Salaries will be based on previous work experience according to TVöD guidelines. This is a full-time position. An initial contract will be offered for two years.
